My German colleague called ahead about an early check-in, and they said it was fine, so I took a taxi straight from the airport. When I arrived with my luggage and knocked, a woman, the wife, yelled at me in German from an upstairs window. The husband opened the door, said something abruptly, and slammed it in my face. I was in a Frankfurt neighborhood with no car and no idea what to do. Then he came back with a piece of paper bearing my name. Ah, a simple misunderstanding. He let me in, gave me my key, and showed me to the room. I couldn't find the Wi-Fi code, so I went back downstairs reluctantly. It seemed more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel, with no front desk. I knocked because I could hear people talking. When the door opened, I said, "Wi-Fi code." The same woman went into an angry tirade I couldn't understand, but I gathered she was saying I needed to speak German or Dutch. Then she immediately handed me a paper with the code on it, so of course she knew what I needed. The bed was fine and the Wi-Fi was great, but the walls were paper thin and I could hear everything outside my room. Luckily, I think I was the only guest there. The church bell across the street woke me several times. At checkout I had to pay in euros because they couldn't figure out either of my credit cards. As I left, I saw the wife upstairs cleaning my room. I don't think I need to say what tip I left. I'm not sure the hospitality business is for them.

Very poor.

I can't believe room cleaning is pretty much unavailable while you're staying there.

We stayed six nights at the Golden Barley. The owner welcomed us warmly and handed over the keys. Usually keys are left in a key safe, but ours were given to us another way. Our room was on the second floor. Several hallway and bathroom lights were broken, and the carpet had multiple stains. It didn't look like it had been cleaned. After three nights, no one had cleaned the room. The owner should have arranged cleaning after two nights to keep the place in good condition. We only got fresh towels and a new garbage bag after the fourth night, when we asked. We later found in the fine print that cleaning requires leaving a card. The owner should still want to maintain the property properly. For us, the Wi-Fi and being near family and a train station were useful. But a hotel should meet certain standards for service and facilities. The owner calls it three stars, which we think is too many.

The hotel has closed, so we tried the new Indigo restaurant. The food was very good, and prices were reasonable. Indian main dishes start at €13 with basmati rice included, starters from €3. There's draft beer, a 0.3 liter shandy for €2.90, and espresso for €2.80. The menu has plenty to choose from, including chicken, beef, duck, fish, and vegetarian dishes. There are a few desserts too. We tried the Indigo ice cream. It was okay for the price, though it didn't have much mango in it. The restaurant used to be in downtown Frankfurt.
