Manhattan Hotel

The staff really went out of their way to make me comfortable, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. My room was spacious and spotless, and the service was outstanding. I’d recommend Manhattan Hotel for a business trip or a leisure stay.

We had a pleasant night before catching a train the next morning. Our room faced the main road, but the double-glazed windows kept it very quiet. The staff were helpful and friendly. It’s only about a five-minute walk from Frankfurt Main station, and I’d definitely come back when transiting through Frankfurt.

I booked a triple room, but the third bed hadn’t been made. When I called, they told me to go down to reception to get the sheets and make it myself. The lifts weren’t working, so I had to use the stairs to and from the third floor. There were opened beer bottles, and I think the beer had been replaced with water. The room wasn’t very clean, and the heat wasn’t on when we arrived, so the kids had to stay dressed for 30 minutes while it warmed up. The streets outside were full of soggy and drug dealers, and we were afraid for our own lives. Our car was parked outside for five minutes and got hit in the front. It was the worst two hours of my life. We ran away, and got no refund or apology from the manager, who was off.

I’m sharing this because I’m disgusted that this otherwise decent hotel still employs a housekeeper I believe was caught stealing from guests. Travelers should know that personal items may not be safe in their room. The manager apologized and gave me a free breakfast, but the housekeeper was still working there. We saw him in the lobby when we returned a week later for our last night in Germany before flying home. At first I would have given the hotel five stars. It was clean, reasonably priced, a five-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof, and the front desk staff were friendly. Then something really bad happened. After a day of sightseeing, I tried to listen to music and my AirPods, which I’d left on the nightstand, wouldn’t pair to my phone as they usually do. The case was battered, stained, and filthy, and the pods didn’t have my ear wax on them. Gross, I know, but it mattered for identifying them. I realized these weren’t mine, and that my room had recently been cleaned. I began to suspect the unthinkable. When I walked down the hall, my AirPods suddenly connected. The housekeeper was nearby wearing AirPods. I asked him directly whether he’d taken mine, even suggesting he might have grabbed them by mistake. He denied it and showed me his black AirPods. I wasn’t convinced. I went to the front desk and explained what I thought had happened. The woman got very irritated and, switching to German, said it wasn’t her problem. She didn’t know I understood some German, so I told her I’d heard her. The manager then got involved, and I took him to the housekeeper. In the lobby, my phone wouldn’t pair with any AirPods. Upstairs near the housekeeper, it connected to “Chloes Airpods.” It wouldn’t connect to the broken AirPods. After a heated exchange in German, which even I couldn’t understand, the housekeeper sheepishly took my AirPods out of the black case and handed them back, reluctantly. Clever move, I’ll give him that. Edit: You didn’t “replace my AirPods.” You gave them back when it clearly said “Chloe‘s Airpods.” And to everyone reading, I think the owner’s response says all there is to know about this hotel’s safety and professionalism.
