The restaurant was packed, so reservations are essential if you don’t want to miss out. Tables are quite close together and seating is tight, presumably because the place is so popular. It felt a little understaffed, but the staff did their best. The food was fantastic overall. The menu said the pork knuckles would take 30 minutes, but they arrived in 10, which was a nice surprise. The gravy was delicious. The knuckles were tasty, though they could have been crispier. The currywurst was decent, with what seemed like homemade sauce and chopped tomatoes. We added an extra sausage. For dessert, the apple strudel came warm with walnut ice cream and vanilla sauce. The sauce wasn’t sweet, and the ice cream was interesting. The flavors were balanced and enjoyable. Given the food, I don’t understand why the restaurant only has 4.2 stars.

The Schweinshaxe at Paulaner am Dom was the best pork knuckle I’ve had in Germany. Its skin was unbelievably crispy, while the meat stayed tender, juicy and full of rich flavor without being greasy. The Brezel was fresh, chewy and perfectly salty, just like a proper Bavarian pretzel should be. We finished with warm, fragrant apple strudel, comforting and nicely balanced between the apples and sweetness. The food and classic Bavarian atmosphere were amazing. Highly recommended!

We went twice over the weekend and loved it both times. It has that cosy, home-like feel, and the food is hearty, authentic German cooking with huge portions. The sauerkraut is especially worth trying. Service stayed quick and superb even when busy, and at about €25 per person including drinks, it feels like good value. 🫶🏽

We came to Paulaner am Dom with my family after I’d had a great experience at its Frankfurt Airport branch. They found us a table despite our not having a reservation, which I appreciated, though the service felt abrupt and not very warm. Maybe the Christmas crowds played a part. The pork knuckle was dry and hard, a letdown after eating much better versions elsewhere on this trip. The busy atmosphere and service also affected how the meal felt. It was decent, but this visit was worth three stars at most.

The warm, welcoming atmosphere makes this a lovely spot to get out of the winter cold with family or friends. The food is filling, delicious, and authentically Bavarian, just what you’d expect in Frankfurt’s old town. I keep coming back.
