Jugendherberge Friedrichstadt

The food was excellent, especially breakfast, which felt like something from a five-star hotel. It’s a fantastic youth hostel, and everyone was friendly and accommodating.

Getting around after 8:00 PM was a serious issue for wheelchair users, since the night entrance wasn’t barrier-free and we were locked in. A portable ramp or another ramp at the stairs would let wheelchair users get outside freely after closing. That 8:00 PM closing time for classes and school trips is also far too early for wheelchair users over 18. The room was nice and wheelchair accessible as we’d requested, but hygiene was poor. It had been cleaned, yet still seemed noisy and not properly clean afterward. Service was a disaster, as was the noise, especially from the cleaning staff. The food was okay, but there wasn’t enough for the price. Reception was also a disaster: no proper introduction and nobody to talk to. The location was okay. I know other youth hostels with a much better standard, even allowing for this being a youth hostel. It’s fine for a short trip, but the quality doesn’t match the price. We won’t stay here again, though we’ll definitely come back to Friedrichstadt for a day trip.

The staff and hostel owners were so friendly, helpful, accommodating, and easy to reach whenever we had a question. Our rooms were spotless, and my food allergy was handled without a problem, with delicious meals prepared for me. We had a lovely short break here on the way back from Denmark. The food was tasty and varied, breakfast had a great selection, and there were plenty of milk alternatives. We were delighted with the people and the whole stay.

Dinner was a complete letdown, and the hygiene wasn’t especially good. Breakfast was okay. The hostel is simply furnished but has what you need, with spacious rooms, some with their own bathrooms and others sharing facilities in the hallway. It’s only a few meters from the center and the beach, and green spaces just behind it give guests, especially school groups, plenty of room to play and exercise.
