Best Western Hotel Am Papenberg

We stayed five nights in early January 2024. The breakfast was my favorite part: lots of choice, a pot of coffee presented nicely, and several teas. The welcoming breakfast attendants kept everything looking good and topped things up quickly. I was pleasantly surprised to find real cutlery, plates and lovely glass tea cups, as hotels of a similar level in the US often use plastic. Every employee was very nice, and the front desk staff were professional. Our room was spacious enough and clean, with a small coffee maker, a stocked mini-fridge, spotless bedding, comfortable beds, and a clean, nicely warm bathroom with typical toiletries. The hotel is about 20-30 minutes on foot from the city center, beside the main hospital, though it was surprisingly quiet, and near some university buildings. There’s guest parking, an Italian restaurant on site, and a supermarket, pharmacy, Domino's, Subway and Burger King close by. I’d definitely recommend it.

We arrived in the evening and used the hotel for a quick stop. The room was nice, the bed was comfortable, and we were glad to have a bath after the snowstorm on the way. There’s an Italian restaurant, and although we had a language barrier, we managed to order. Breakfast was delicious. The room doesn’t have blackout curtains, but it does have a button for the shutter! All in all, a great hotel.

Breakfast was the best part, everything was so delicious. The rooms were cozy, and reception was available at all times of day. The location isn’t the best, about a 20-minute bus ride from the train station, and I had some trouble finding the main entrance.

The hotel is four stars only on paper. It has some good points: a big free car park, friendly staff, and easy check-in and check-out. But several things you’d expect from a four-star place are missing. There’s no air conditioning in the room, the coffee machine is hidden in the closet so you don’t find it, and the Wi-Fi is super slow. Breakfast was just standard, with plenty of items missing, croissants for example, and not as good as many comments suggest. I’d take off a star for the lack of air con, another for the mediocre breakfast, and a third because I’m a platinum member of BW and staff didn’t add the reservation to my account when I asked. Not cool. I won’t come back.
