Appartements in der Deichstraße

Just as promised, clean, and a great place.

The staff in the office and the concierge were very friendly, and the key system worked perfectly. The basement apartment was bright enough and warm, even in February, and everything matched the description. The bedding and mattresses were very comfortable. I took off a star because the sink was tiny, the towel hooks were loose, there were no towel rails, and only one towel had loops.

We slept well, and the apartment was clean and centrally located. The bathroom had a toilet and a separate shower, and the kitchen seemed to have everything needed, though we only made tea and ate out. We booked through Booking.com and missed that this was a basement apartment, so that was our mistake. Still, we had thought we'd booked one of the apartments upstairs, and for what it was, it felt expensive. The living room wall was damp and the paint was peeling. The windows only tilt open, and their frosted glass faces the courtyard where people walk by, so we didn't feel we could leave them open during the day in case someone threw something in. It was noisy for sleeping: people walking through the courtyard, and in the morning every footstep sounded like it was right overhead. On weekends, tourists on Deichstrasse were noisy until after 11 pm. The entrance felt dark and unwelcoming in the evening. To take the rubbish out, you have to carry the bin through a dirty, unlit passage about 15 meters long to the courtyard. The apartment is right next to the laundry, so the damp, clean smell from five washing machines was always there. There were two single beds, and the bathroom and toilet doors are meant to stay open because of the damp. That doesn't make an otherwise nice apartment any prettier.

Hamburg's historic street is lovely, and this apartment is right in the center. It's always been clean and cozy. I really like it!
