Hotel Behrmann

I stayed here on 27 and 28 April 2024. The bathroom was clean, and the bed linen looked fresh, but the room itself wasn't properly cleaned. The carpet hadn't been vacuumed and the lamps were dusty. Breakfast was okay. Reception staff were unfriendly and surly, with no smile or warm welcome. I don't mind an old-fashioned hotel, but that attitude wasn't acceptable. On 28 April I was out from 08:00 to 17:00, yet the room hadn't been cleaned or the bed made when I returned. I made it myself, then noticed the mattress cover under the sheet was spotty and didn't look clean. There was no safe in the room for valuables like my passport and money. When I asked reception about one, I got a grumpy “no,” so I had to carry everything around in my handbag while sightseeing in Hamburg. The website's photo gallery shows a small bar, which gave the impression you could get a drink there. But it's in the dining room, which closes after breakfast until the next morning.

We stayed in the older part of this very German hotel. It's no-frills, right down to the closet hangers you can't take, lol. The restaurant stayed open all day so we could work there, but the WiFi was horrible unless you were in the lobby or restaurant. Breakfast was very European and really good, with fresh bread and yogurt.

A standard Garni hotel, fine for a night or two if you just want the usual services. The main building's rooms are old-fashioned, and the mattress was too hard to be comfortable. Breakfast hours were strictly followed. You can park behind the building or in the garage.

The interior has a nice seventies feel, and the location is good with free parking. It's a very basic hotel, which is okay in itself, though the towels are a disgrace. The real trouble was the management and their computer system. We were arranging rooms for our golfing team. Emails went unanswered, and calling was a disaster even though I speak German quite well. The man who answered said his boss handled email and never replied. Other reviews here confirm that seems to be their policy. We eventually got confirmation for a large room for three, but when we arrived it wasn't available and, in fact, didn't exist. After a lot of thought, Manuel at the desk and a long-haired assistant came up with unhelpful suggestions, then remembered there was one more room for our son. We were assured we'd pay the rate for the imaginary family room. After I'd paid, they called me back because Manuel had made a mistake. I'd noticed during the payment that this happened to him often. I went back right away, ready to fix the error, but was asked for nearly double what I'd paid, which had been about what I expected. That didn't seem reasonable. My objection led to a long consultation with the computer and no answer. Then Basil, the manager, arrived flustered. He first suggested the original amount, then withdrew that offer and went back to studying the computer. He again asked for a price that didn't match the maximum for two rooms, and threatened to call the police. He said he'd never been so insulted in his life. I explained again in German that he couldn't charge more than the normal price for two rooms. I said I'd pay what he asked, an extra 150 euros, so we could finally leave. Manuel then handed me the machine showing 285 euros extra, which I refused. Basil used his old calculator and came up with the price for two rooms, 50 euros more than I'd originally paid. I paid straight away, and we could finally leave Behrmann Towers.
