Hotel Helgoland

The room was nice and clean, but there were several things that made the stay frustrating. Breakfast wasn’t included, and the desk should have posted the price: one person there said it was 10 euros, but at checkout we found out it was 17. The ticket system was confusing too. We had to convince the clerk we’d taken five tickets rather than six, since tickets aren’t logged and one staff member couldn’t tell what another had handed us two days earlier. Parking was awkward. We had to call the front desk to drive in, then call again five minutes later to open the gate on the way out. The room key didn’t work for the parking gate. The hotel also doesn’t take credit cards, so bring cash. It would be nice to have a basic 10-dollar coffee machine and a refrigerator in every room. AN

The staff were friendly, and the rooms were clean. The decor feels old-fashioned, but everything worked, and being able to open the window was a nice touch. The curtains let in too much early morning light, though, and noise carried very clearly from outside the room since the hotel has little soundproofing. For a night or two, the price makes it a decent option.

Breakfast had what we wanted, especially fresh fruit and good tea, and the breakfast staff were lovely. The water heater hadn’t been switched to hot, but they quickly brought hot water from the kitchen. The place was cozy and clean, with friendly staff and fair value. My room had no ventilation and smelled stale, and someone was smoking on the non-smoking floor. A staff member said they couldn’t do anything about that.

The staff made the strongest impression, they were attentive and helpful. The hotel itself was quiet and comfortable, and I enjoyed my stay.
