Google emailed me saying my review about a bad stay at this hostel had been removed as defamation. Choosing to do that instead of trying to improve says a lot about the business. In the room, the lights were dim and rubbish was scattered around. The lockers were small and faulty, and the facilities felt badly managed and unhygienic. We had left our bedsheet and pillowcases in place before going out, but they were gone when we came back. Staff refused to replace them and gave no explanation. There were no towels or anything else for drying off, so we had to use our own things. At night, roommates played music or games loudly and talked over each other. Staff did nothing about the noise. We paid an exorbitant amount for two nights, plus an extra fee that had never been disclosed upfront or mentioned anywhere. The place was also noisy, with inconsiderate neighbors. I found the hostel expensive and unkempt, and the whole stay was unpleasant.

The owners were really friendly, and the rooms felt fresh and clean apart from a little dust in the corners. The blackout window covers were a nice touch. The bathrooms are on the small side, but the hostel isn’t very big, so we never had trouble using one when we needed it. It’s easy enough to get to the city center from here, while Reeperbahn is far enough away that its activity didn’t bother us. This is still a hostel, so don’t expect luxury, but it was comfortable and clean for a weekend. I’d stay again.

The staff really made our stay. They were so friendly and helpful, and let us stay at the hostel for another 12 hours while we waited for our train. That was a lifesaver. Pauli Hostel has a fun, unusual character. The rooms are simple but have what you need, and there’s a shared kitchen that’s minimal but handy for making something easy. There are just two bathrooms per gender, though they and the showers were very clean and well looked after. Getting around is easy since the metro station is right across the street. A great vibe for a budget stay in Hamburg, highly recommended.

The owner was so friendly and totally fine with me sleeping in late 😅😴. It’s a cute little hostel, and the rooms are nice and quiet.

The dorms were roomy and cozy, and there was a real sense of freedom for guests. The kitchen was always open, whether you wanted to cook fish or listen to the radio. Our contact Solomon greeted us every time with a big smile and great energy. I think he helped set the tone, since we had several INTERESTING interactions with other guests too. For exploring the URBAN side of Hamburg, the location couldn’t have suited us better. Pro tip: if you’re staying with ten Swedish young adult friends, bring scent spray and you’ll become the most popular in the group. I don’t have many photos of Pauli Hostel, but I definitely came away with lifelong memories. We had an AMAZING stay!
