The Fontenay

We had dinner downstairs, where the terrace looks over a lovely stretch of lawn with the Alster just beyond it. The steak tartare and traditional Königsberger Klopse were both delicious, and their own beer was good too. I also liked the hand creams in the restrooms. The Fontenay is beautifully designed, in a prime spot overlooking the Alster, and is probably one of Hamburg’s best hotels.

The pianist's smooth, low voice and the songs he played really got to me. We were there for ladies' night and had a fantastic time, though our visit was too short. The setting, service, and atmosphere all felt worthy of a five-star hotel. I'm sure I'll be back.

The linens and towels had an unpleasant smell, which was disappointing in a hotel with such high standards otherwise. I also had to ask for still water every evening because the complimentary drinking water in the room was limited. They should note whether guests prefer still or sparkling water and leave enough without being asked. I also think bicycles for hotel guests should only require a refundable deposit, not an extra charge. There was a lot to like as well: the concierge was excellent, reception made us feel welcome, and the breakfast had great quality and variety. The facilities are lovely, with beautiful design, a luxurious feel, and a great location by the lake. I would definitely return and hope management takes these suggestions on board.

The rooftop spa and pool were such a peaceful place to relax, with lovely views across Hamburg, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Our room had plenty of space, was very clean, and had an amazing view. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was top-notch, and the hotel's modern, elegant design felt calm and welcoming. It's right by Lake Alster, a great spot for a luxury stay that still feels warm.
