After a major restoration, the Zollenspieker ferry house returned in spring 1998 as a reminder of its heyday as a popular outing spot in the early 20th century. The building had become a destination during the 19th century, thanks in part to the "Lauenburg steamships" stopping here on their Dömitz to Hamburg route. Sunday trips from Hamburg to Zollenspieker stayed popular well into the post-war years. The last paddle steamer on the regular Hamburg-Lauenburg route was taken out of service in 1961. Built in 1621 in the Renaissance style on the foundations of a medieval predecessor, the ferry house stopped serving as a toll station in 1806. The "Esslingen toll" itself was abolished later, in 1863, under the Elbe Shipping and Customs Treaty.

The setting is beautiful, and the service was really friendly. I was surprised, though, that my fish and chips seemed to be a frozen ready-made meal. For such a high-quality restaurant, I expected something closer to fish and chips in the UK.
