Hotel Nassauer Hof

Our booking included parking just around the corner. The location is very good, within walking distance of “everything,” but one block away from streets with traffic or bars, so it was quiet. The reception and breakfast area on the ground floor were very nice, and breakfast was brilliant. The room didn’t feel four star: it was small, a bit dated, and the bathroom smelled of sewage.

The room was generally clean and had a decent range of amenities, though I noticed there was no complimentary water. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and the location is convenient. But the view was disappointing, mostly the ordinary bustle of the street below rather than the picturesque cityscape you might hope for in a historic location. Street noise was a constant backdrop, even in quieter hours, and better soundproofing might help. Light from streetlamps and nearby buildings also came into the room at night. I prefer a darker room for sleeping, so heavier drapes or blackout blinds would be a useful addition. Hotel Heidelberger Hof has potential, but these things detracted from my stay. If the view and outside noise don’t matter much to you, it could work. If they do, you may want to consider other options.

The main problem came with arriving late. My flight was delayed, so I reached the hotel at 9:30pm on a Sunday. It was locked, dark, and unwelcoming, with no access instructions in the booking confirmation or on the door. You have to call the hotel and get talked through a convoluted process to access a safe box and key. If my phone had died or not worked, I’d have been stranded outside. With no phone or a language barrier, I’m not sure how anyone would get in. For a hotel advertising 4 star service, that’s completely unacceptable. I expect a 4 star hotel to have reception 24/7, and the late arrival process needs a complete overhaul. The hotel itself is nice, with a great old town location and friendly, helpful staff. My room was lovely, small but perfectly adequate for my needs, and very clean and tidy. Breakfast was well presented and the food was very good, though I’d expect more choice at a 4 star hotel. There was no bottled water or mini bar, both of which I’d expect at that rating. I stayed for a short work trip.

The receptionist was a very kind lady, and breakfast was nice. Our room was spacious and nicely done. Parking is about 30 meters away, and the location is great if you’re visiting the old town. If steps are a problem for you, I suggest asking in advance before booking.
