The four of us stopped in around 3 p.m. on Epiphany after a long hike. The food took a bit longer than expected, but there was plenty of it and it was very, very good. Service was exceptionally friendly and professional. Prices felt a little high given the current lower VAT rate, though it is a hotel restaurant, which is part of the picture. My scale is straightforward and I'm honest about it: 1 star means simply bad, 2 below expectations, 3 as expected and my usual rating, 4 above expectations with a little room to improve, and 5 means exceptionally good, perfect, and something I'm absolutely thrilled with.

We've known this restaurant for a long time and have watched it decline over the past three years. For our February 14 reservation, I asked for a window table and a bouquet. Other guests were seated at the reserved table with the flowers, and only after I asked were the flowers moved onto our table. Wine was spilled during service, but nobody changed the tablecloth or napkin. The food wasn't worth the price, and prices and quality no longer match.

We waited a long time for both drinks and food, and the service felt amateurish. The homemade pumpkin gnocchi came cold, in a very small portion, and were huge, sticky, undercooked, and bland. There were far too few peppercorns. The sauce with spinach was excellent, but the dish as a whole was disappointing.

There were only four occupied tables, yet we waited a very long time for our drinks and food, priced between €25 and €37. The next table got appetizers before we even received our drinks, despite arriving later, and the waiters checked on guests only now and then. The menu on Saturday night was very limited, with some dishes unavailable. The schnitzel was just okay and the trout bland, short on seasoning. Our waiter was very friendly, though he clearly hadn't used deodorant that day. All in all, a disgrace for Jena's oldest hotel. It's a shame, we would have come more often.

We keep coming back because the staff are so friendly, and we always enjoy the food. Definitely the place to go in Jena if you want a good meal.
