I really wish I’d checked the Google reviews before booking. The place is near the center and close to the water, which is nice, but a sewer odor hung around the entire time. It was strongest in the bathroom and a little less noticeable by the bed, though it never disappeared. I was staying in apartment Nr.1. The shower didn’t drain properly, so water spilled over. There are also stairs between the bedroom and bathroom. I knew about them beforehand, but using them was still a real nuisance. Payment was cash only. They said they had no card machine, and I had to pay slightly more than the stated amount because there was no change. With that smell, it was certainly not something I wanted to leave as a tip. Since I booked through Booking.com, I wondered why I couldn’t pay there instead.

The room was large and lovely, with a four-poster bed, big windows, lots of light, a comfortable sofa, and a beautiful table. The small kitchen was downstairs, reached by a sturdy staircase, and came with a hallway and a Charlie Chaplin picture on the brick wall. The bathroom was spotless and felt elegant. It was a lovely place to unwind and explore Lübeck, and the room had all the information we needed for sightseeing. We checked in by phone and got a first-class welcome from the start. The apartment had clearly been prepared with care and a good eye for interior design. It was very clean throughout. Ms. Demuth was always available, and our questions were answered whenever we had them. Thank you for such a nice holiday apartment.

The hygiene and organization were awful, and the place felt unsafe. There was dust everywhere, food scraps in the sink, sticky residue on the bathtub, and towels that smelled moldy. I also found someone else’s blonde hair in the bed, though I have long brown hair. The fitted sheets were too small and kept coming off, and the mattresses weren’t properly covered. The landlady kept saying she “can’t do anything about it.” The bad reviews suggest these problems have been going on for years, so this seemed like a recurring situation, not a one-off. There were also serious privacy issues. A man once let himself in without knocking, putting his key in the lock and suddenly appearing in the room. He said he was there to collect money, even though we’d only been told an hour earlier that payment had to be in cash, so we’d had to rush to the bank. The same man came back another time without warning. We only “caught” him because we were in bed together. That was completely unacceptable. While we were still there, new guests were about to check in. It seemed they’d forgotten we were still in the room and were already getting it ready for the next arrivals. The whole thing was chaotic and showed no respect. Never again. Save yourself the trouble and stay somewhere you feel safer.

For a mid-range price, the quality was poor. The place was dirty and seemed hazardous to health, with moldy towels and walls. Just disgusting. Never again.
