We were staying in town for a conference at Johannes Gutenberg University. Since the hotel restaurant and lounge are usually open for guests to have tea or coffee and work, my colleague and I went there to prepare our presentation with our laptops. The night receptionist was already talking very loudly at the desk to people passing by. We put up with it, but then he came into the restaurant and kept making noise: dragging his slippers, moving chairs loudly, setting his dinner down noisily, and eating with disturbing sounds. It went on for about ten minutes, and we couldn’t work. When my colleague went to our room to get headphones, the receptionist took off his own headphones and rudely asked, “What, is there a problem?” It seemed intentional to us. I said it was a bit noisy, and he launched into an aggressive tirade. He shouted, “Did you say I made noise?” “Get out of here.” “This is mine, I am the boss here.” “I’m closing this place and I won’t allow you to work.” “I’ll throw you and your computer out of here.” He also made completely inappropriate remarks such as, “Call your husband.” Then he came toward us, tried to grab our computer, and unplugged it. We were shocked that a hotel receptionist would behave this way and physically assault guests. We immediately asked for an investigation. The manager kindly apologized and offered a courteous gesture, which we appreciate. The employee himself never apologized and continued to be rude. The manager also said this employee had treated her the same way. Clearly, this doesn’t feel like a safe place for women and children in the evenings. I’m filing this serious complaint about the night receptionist’s aggressive behavior and demand appropriate action. Please tell me what concrete steps you’ll take to protect guests’ safety and dignity.

The breakfast buffet was pretty good, though the hotel itself is very basic. I ended up there after Lufthansa cancelled my flight. Check-in around midnight took ages, and they couldn’t even offer or sell me a toothbrush. The room was basic but okay. The bed was so hard that my hip hurts.

Breakfast starts at 6:30, which is handy for business travelers, and there’s also a pool, a real rarity in Germany. The rooms are well insulated: I was right beside the elevator, which usually makes me nervous, but I never heard it moving. My only gripe was the pillows. I prefer the rectangular American kind, and these were the old-school German squares. I’d highly recommend the hotel to anyone needing a room in Mainz.

The city center is a bit of a trek. It’s manageable with a car, but would be a hassle without one. Otherwise, the rooms are great, the staff are friendly, and breakfast is excellent. It seems to be the sort of hotel German tourists stay at.

The hotel is well placed for getting to Meinz and Frankfurt, and I found the staff friendly enough. I stayed four nights and had a good-sized room. Breakfast was okay, with plenty of cold meats and bread if that’s your thing. There’s no bar, unfortunately, just a vending machine. You can’t have everything, right? ;)
