Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nürnberg

The spa and gym felt like an afterthought rather than a well-planned part of the hotel. Maybe those facilities matter less to the typical business guest, though. The rooms were nice but a bit dated, while the staff were always around and very helpful. La Meridien sits centrally, just outside the medieval city walls of Nuremberg. Its early 20th-century style comes through in the lobby, staircases, restaurant and bar, which made it feel like stepping back into the roaring 20s. A great experience.

Our room was surprisingly spacious by European standards, with the necessary amenities, clean linens and a comfortable bed. We also had a fantastic view, and the full-service breakfast was delicious. The hotel was very busy with tourists, but the staff handled the rush seamlessly. We stayed here during a German road trip, and the location opposite the main train station made getting around easy. If you’re driving, stop on the main street to unload your luggage first. Staff will direct you to a paid garage across the street; you have to make a U-turn to park. A great spot for experiencing a piece of history.

The hotel itself didn’t give me much to rave about, and the walls are paper-thin. You can hear what’s happening in the street and in neighboring rooms, so light sleepers may have trouble. I didn’t eat or drink at the hotel, so I can’t comment on the food, but there are plenty of good restaurants within a block. The location is what earns it three stars from me: right across from the train station and at the start of the old town, so you can walk around the whole area.

The location is excellent and the rooms are nice, though the place feels a little dark, especially the hallways. With a facelift and some updates, it could score better. Still, a solid choice.
