We are not American. The food was genuinely excellent, with well-prepared, flavourful dishes that clearly showed skill and care. If all you want is a good meal, you’ll likely be satisfied. The atmosphere, though, was uncomfortable and unwelcoming. Service lacked basic courtesy, particularly towards women, and we didn’t feel there was much respect or hospitality. The manager seemed to have a serious ego issue and gave the impression guests were welcome only if they came in “with his blessing.” This was especially apparent toward non-German patrons. The place felt hostile to tourists, and visitors from outside Germany may feel dismissed. Because the food itself was so good, we can still recommend the restaurant to people focused solely on eating well and willing to put up with poor service. We wouldn’t recommend it to international visitors, tourists, or anyone looking for warmth, respect or professional hospitality.

I can’t comment on the restaurant, only the hotel, and our experience was awful. We’d requested a queen bed with our booking but got two separate twin beds. There was almost nothing in the room, not even a kettle. They provided towels, a tiny bar of soap instead of a dish, and shampoo or shower gel in packets about the size of a single-use wet wipe. The floor was so cold we couldn’t take our shoes off, and both the beds and floor creaked. We asked through Booking to switch rooms and got no reply. It seemed no one checked the app once they’d received payment. They left a phone number, but there was no WhatsApp, so as tourists without a German phone line we had no way to contact them. Apart from us and the restaurant owner, who apparently runs the restaurant separately, there was nobody else there.

The beer was really good and worth the trip. We came in for dinner and enjoyed both the food and the service. The new owners have turned the place around: everything was tasty, plentiful and reasonably priced for the location.

The restaurant was a bright spot: it was great and fun, and there were complimentary homemade Christmas cookies on the table. The location was good too. The hotel service was poor, with nobody around to help with check-in or check-out. Our room wasn’t very clean; there was a dead bug on my pillow, and a towel had what looked like food or blood on it. The towels were threadbare, and the pillow was lumpy and uncomfortable. After checkout we left our bags while walking around, but the door was locked when we came back. Luckily the restaurant owner opened it before the restaurant was even open. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have retrieved our luggage before our train left.

The Haribo, literally the tiniest one, was yummy. That’s about the only nice thing I can say. The heating was terrible and the room was cold. We’d asked for one large bed but got two small twin beds instead. There was no reception when we went downstairs, and I don’t know what we’d have done if we couldn’t get into the room. I wrote through Booking, but after four days there was still no answer. The room had almost no supplies, just half a handful of shampoo or shower gel. What a stay. Probably the worst experience possible in that little town. Good luck.
