Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden

The rates were in line with a five-star hotel, but the facilities and service fell far short of that level. For what I paid, the hotel offered poor value and I wouldn't recommend it. Breakfast was disappointing, mostly different kinds of bread with little else to choose from, and the range and quality didn't justify the price. The rooms were uncomfortable, the shower facilities weren't satisfactory, and the maintenance and overall quality didn't meet expectations.

The staff were kind and helpful, which I appreciated, but my expectations for Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden were higher given its brand and reputation. Compared with similar hotels in other countries, it didn't reach the level I'd expect from a five-star property. The smoking was a serious issue. People seemed to be allowed to smoke in the lobby, lounge, and bar, and the smell reached all over the hotel, including the rooms. When we asked, staff said it was acceptable. Main indoor areas at an international high-end hotel should be non-smoking, with designated smoking areas, ideally outdoors or properly enclosed and ventilated. Smoking in central spaces makes things unpleasant for non-smokers, older guests, families, and people with respiratory sensitivities, and takes away from the luxury feel. At certain times the bar atmosphere was uncomfortable too, and didn't feel refined or professional. It was uncomfortable to see very young women surrounded by much older men. A stronger non-smoking policy and better management of the public areas could make this a much better premium experience.

This is meant as constructive feedback, not an attack. I was visiting for the first time and didn't know my way around, so I expected a staff member to help with my luggage and show me to my room. Instead I had to carry everything myself and find the room alone. That shouldn't happen at one of Algiers' most prestigious hotels. It's a well-known hotel with a five-star rating, but the customer service felt nonexistent. I hope things will be better next time. Best regards.

The hotel was comfortable, had a pleasant atmosphere, and the staff were generally welcoming. I chose it after reading lots of positive reviews, so I was disappointed by one interaction that left me with a bad impression. I spoke Arabic, my native language, and also speak English very well, but the reply I got was in French, which I don't understand at all. At a five-star hotel, staff should speak with guests in a language they use, or at least try to accommodate them. To me, that's basic respect and professionalism. I hope management takes this seriously and improves guest communication.
