Ismailia House Inn

The friendly staff and the view over Tahrir sq were the only good parts. I booked a deluxe double with a private bathroom and balcony, but got a damp, awful room with just a window and no TV. They gave me a 100 EP discount for the missing TV, as if that fixed it. The internet connection was terrible, my sinusitis was killing me while I was there, and the hallway smelled really bad. The receptionist said there’d be building maintenance from 9 to 5, so I had to put up with the noise. It looked nothing like the online photos. Not recommended.

The room was nice and the view stunning, all for 300 pound. It was very clean, and the location couldn’t be much better: right in the city center, the museum across the street and the metro downstairs. The people were helpful, and the value for the price was great. It’s a little difficult to find, under the arch between the square and a backstreet, and the elevators are... 😱

The only thing going for this place is its central Cairo location. The elevators need renovation, the rooms need repairs and air conditioning, and the bathrooms need fixing, including high-pressure shower water. There’s a shared kitchen that needs attention too. Coming from Europe, I can’t recommend the hostel at all. I gave it one star because of where it is, and still do not recommend it whatsoever.

The Ismailia Hotel is a simple, affordable base in a convenient central spot, close to attractions like the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square. Rooms are functional, with basics such as a private bathroom and air conditioning, and there’s a small restaurant for breakfast and other meals. The staff are friendly and helpful. The place is showing its age and could use renovation, but it’s good value for travelers on a tight budget who care more about price than luxury.
