We were excited to come after seeing the pictures and reviews, though those reviews seemed to be from too long ago. The recent ones must have been written by staff relatives! Hotel Utopia may have been nice back when the town was thriving, but construction stopped midway and it now feels like a ghost town. As you drive in, the charm fades: empty, unfinished buildings, with steel bars sticking out of the cement walls. The hotel felt just as lifeless. The lights were off when we entered and there was nobody around except staff, who looked at us but didn't come over. It felt like they were waiting for us to turn around once we saw what we'd booked. So that's what we did. We went to nearby Vejer de la Frontera instead, a beautiful place full of people enjoying themselves, with plenty of hotel choices that won't disappoint. If you still go to hotel Utopia, take a selfie when you see where you've arrived. It's a moment to capture.

The hotel was clean, but the rest left a lot to be desired. My room's air conditioner was incredibly noisy, the mattress sagged, there was no Wi-Fi or refrigerator, and the TV had only four channels and was as dated as the air conditioner. There was no reception. We had to collect the keys from a little box, like at a tourist apartment. Check-in was strictly from 4:00 PM. Arrive even 10 minutes early and the hotel is closed, leaving you out on the street in very pleasant temperatures. There's no bar service either, just breakfast for €7.50 between 9:00 and 11:00 AM. The town has a lively feel, plenty of places to eat, and is close to everything.
