Green river hostel

Green River Hostel in Cuenca felt welcoming, with a great vibe, and we’d definitely return. We stayed for an extended visit and felt comfortable, safe, and well looked after the whole time. The hostel was spotless, and the care they put into cleanliness really stood out. Special thanks to Juan and Helena for going above and beyond to make us feel at home. Highly recommended!

The location is great, the staff are friendly, and the common areas are nice. The dorms feel a bit cramped for the number of beds, and my locker was broken. I also think the beds could be less wobbly.

I was in town to climb and stayed here for an extended visit. It had a really relaxed feel, and Juan, Helena, and the volunteers made me feel welcome and at home. I’d stay here again.

I booked a private family room with a balcony and city views, split across two levels, the one they use to promote the rooms on Booking and here. When I arrived, the man at reception tricked me into checking in even though he knew the room I’d booked and paid for wasn’t available, so I got no refund. Instead, I was put in a dorm at the back of the hostel, with bunk beds and a translucent door that you couldn’t see through unless it was open. There were no views, just a backyard belonging to other people’s apartments. From the start, the man was rude. He insisted there was no mistake and said, “you get what you get.” Even though he knew it wasn’t the room I had booked, he didn’t apologize and made me feel extremely unwelcome and uncomfortable. The next morning, he yelled at me for eating in the communal space. He shouted so much that I had to tell him to calm down. I was really scared and started shaking afterward. You also can’t keep your pet with you in the common area, so it isn’t a pet friendly hostel. The pictures might look “cool,” but don’t be fooled. There are lots of places in Cuenca, including ones with better prices. I left after one night because I was afraid of how I’d be treated after being yelled at and given the wrong room. I’ve never had such horrendous treatment as a guest in any country.
