The room itself was spacious and clean, but the TV and some lights didn't work, and our requested double bed turned out to be two twins. This hostel changed hands about a month ago, and the reception is in a hotel 100 meters away. We were given the wrong key and had to swap it; finding the right room was tricky too, since some rooms had been painted but the doors had no labels. I'm not sold on the new white paint and preferred the older, slightly retro look. Maybe it'll be better when the renovation is finished and the website has updated photos, but at over €60 a night, there are likely better choices in Madrid.

They charge for cancelled rooms and foreign currency exchange fees without warning. When you call to ask how to cancel, they say a call is enough, then charge you anyway. Their website advertises free breakfast for direct bookings, but breakfast costs 4 euros if you ask for it. I emailed asking them to sort things out and got no reply; when I called, they said they hadn't received the message. They also blamed the email issue on transferring the hostel last month, though it had actually been three months earlier. Just an excuse to brush me off. No seriousness at all.

El servicio de recepción no está disponible las 24 horas, además deja bastante que desear. No es profesional si se puede confiar en el mismo. Las habitación exterior que ocupé está muy mal insonorizada; la "experiencia" resulta ruidosa. Además necesita, por lo menos, una mano de pintura.

There was plenty of room in my room, and I felt right at home. It was all very clean, with modern decor and friendly staff. The location is superb and good value for the money, with bars, restaurants, and even healthy takeaway spots just off Calle Pez. A great base in Malasaña.
