Hostal Apolo Xi

For 39euro, I got a private room with two beds, a sink, shutters that block out the light, and loads of space under those incredibly high ceilings. Check-in was friendly, and the place is right in the centre of town, which worked well for a few nights. Best private room I’ve had in europe so far. No complaints.

The location is very good, but I found the room basic and not especially clean. The beds were small, the sheets flimsy, and noise from the busy cafés outside carried on all night. Staff would appear unexpectedly and check the door whenever I was in the shared toilet or shower. They also came after me on the stairs every day to ask whether I was checking out, though that didn’t happen on the day I actually left. It was kind of funny, to be fair, but I don’t think this place is for everyone.

The guesthouse is right in the heart of Madrid City Center, but I couldn’t hear street noise in my room. I was there for the Champions League final and everything was fine. I had a private bathroom, though some rooms share one. The only downside was hearing the neighbours when they spoke loudly. Apolo XI was a good deal for my three nights, about 300 euros, especially with places in Madrid so expensive. I later saw the same number of nights for half that price, though. I recommend staying here. (PS: in Madrid we won it 6 times!!!!)

Friendly, helpful staff and good facilities. The double rooms are spacious, and the metro is right across the street. There are around 100 bars and cafés to choose from nearby, so it stays busy both day and night.
