Voco Madrid Retiro Hotel

Comfortable beds, good coffee at breakfast, and consistently friendly, professional staff were the bright spots. But our stay felt far below what we'd expect from a genuine four-star hotel, and we wouldn't recommend it if you want a comfortable, high-quality experience. The rooms were the main problem. Ours had damaged flooring, chipped surfaces, marks on the walls and poorly installed fixtures. After we raised it, we were offered another room. That one was better, but its finish was still below average. We also saw cleanliness problems in shared areas, especially the breakfast room, and greasy menu cards at the bar. That's unacceptable for a hotel in this category. The name “voco Madrid El Retiro” also gave the wrong impression: the hotel is about 2 km from El Retiro park, has no views at all, and sits in a rather uninspiring spot beside a main road. We were genuinely surprised by how positive the online reviews were, since they didn't match what we experienced. The place felt much closer to a lower-category property than a true four-star hotel.

The room had nice lamps and finishes, a comfortable bathroom with a good shower and hygiene products, and very effective curtains that kept the daylight out. The bed was super comfortable, the air conditioning worked perfectly, and the staff, including Sandra at the front desk, were very kind. Great location, too. The glass sliding bathroom door didn't give much privacy, and the room door let corridor noise through.

Breakfast was enjoyable and the food quality was outstanding. The rooms are comfortable and have all the amenities you need, and paid parking is available. It's a very nice hotel, easy to get around from by public transport or on foot.

We spent five nights at Voco Madrid, and the room was excellent, better than we expected. The service was friendly, and breakfast was very good compared with other four-star hotels. I'd recommend it and don't regret choosing it. The bed was a little too soft for me, though I could still fall asleep. The location is okay if you mainly use Uber, and it's near Atocha train station. The major attractions are 3-5 km away.
