I liked having a calm place to land and recharge between walks through Picasso’s world and the busy streets of Andalusia. Pensión Santa Paula felt like a pause in time, simple and central, with a quiet rhythm despite the old building. The guests were respectful, reception was kind, and the shared bathrooms were kept tidy. You can walk to the beach, museums, cathedral and local cafés from here. The rooms are modest but clean and practical, more a traveller’s stop than a holiday retreat. The old walls seem to carry stories, sensed more than heard. For luxury, look elsewhere, but if you want an affordable, grounded stay where you can walk everywhere and feel Málaga’s pulse through the windows, Pensión Santa Paula will do well. The location is amazing, and the comfort feels right for a hostel level price. I had a late flight at around 22:00, so booking a room for one person gave us somewhere to leave our luggage and rest for a while. I can’t say what it’s like to spend a full night here.

The service was okay and the location was good. The pension itself seems poorly maintained. The rooms were dirty and didn’t look like the Booking photos, the covers weren’t clean, and it was noisy. You can guess the rest.

The location makes it easy to walk to all the sights, and the beds were reasonably comfortable and at least clean. Beyond that, the place needs urgent renovation. Some bathrooms were downright filthy, and the windows let in a lot of street noise even with the shutters closed. Breakfast was especially poor for Spain: no fruit, cheese, or anything fresh, just tiny packaged spreads and jam with toast or bread that was a bit stale. The coffee tasted like instant coffee and came from a thermos, while the only juice seemed much more sugar than fruit. You'll need to find breakfast elsewhere. I'd only suggest staying here if you can live with all those problems or just need one of the cheapest options.
