Hotel Montenegro

We really appreciated being able to leave our bags at the hotel for a few days while we walked part of the Camino, then come back for another night. The location is great. The room was fine for a one-night stay, though the facilities felt limited, with no tea or coffee-making setup.

The location is good, but the hotel itself felt mediocre, and overnight parking is a problem if you drive into town. The rooms are small, which is understandable in an old European centre, but there were other issues too. The shower worked well, though there was mold on the ceiling and around the tub. It took a long time for warm water to come through, and the entrance door was odd and needed both hands to open. The room key is supposed to turn on the lights and A/C, but the lights came on anyway and there was no A/C, just a fake switch and a small tower fan.

My room itself was fine, but it had a balcony facing the street and the pub below stayed open. People were so loud that sleeping was impossible. The hotel should have told us about that.

The morning noise was the one real drawback: the ceiling is thin, and the cleaning crew walking above made very loud squeaks. Aside from that, Hotel Montenegro in Santiago de Compostela is hard to fault. It sits right in the historic centre, and the price is excellent for what you get. The stonework and charming rooms give it an authentic Galician feel, with tasteful décor that makes everything warm and stylish. Service was consistently friendly and attentive without hovering. An ideal place to stay in Santiago.
