The way the staff handled our unused second room left a bad impression. We had booked two standard rooms, but on the day we could only use one because my adult children were very sick and unable to travel. I understand the no-cancellation policy, but when we called to explain and ask whether a refund might be possible if someone else took the room, the staff said Booking.com would decide and pay them. Booking.com told us the hotel could choose whether to waive the fee. The hotel would be paid for both rooms either way, so any goodwill gesture was up to them. They should have simply said they wouldn’t accept the cancellation instead of making it sound as though they might, but couldn’t because of Booking.com. They could at least have offered us a coffee, but they didn’t. The service concept needs work. The hotel is well placed for Château Cheverny and has free parking. It has a well-rated restaurant, and another restaurant with an even better rating is nearby. We were moved to a more spacious room after we could only take one, and the double bed was very comfortable. I also liked the Nuxe products in the bathroom, as I use them at home. Still, for a four-star hotel, I expected slippers, and the floor was dusty and sandy. I walked barefoot indoors and found it unpleasant. There were no tea or coffee-making facilities in the room either, the first time I’ve seen that despite how much I travel. In the morning, the room smelled as if we were stewing in wine sauce. They must have been cooking in the basement, and somehow the smell reached our room on the fifth floor.

Our confirmation came through late, so I had to call the hotel to check. They confirmed the booking when I rang. We only stayed one night while traveling around the country, and the room had everything we needed. A great hotel.

We were cycling through the village, and the hotel had secure bike storage for us. The staff were friendly and happy to accommodate us. Our room felt new and modern, with tasteful furnishings and a well-equipped bathroom. It also had a mini fridge. The hotel is right in the heart of the village.

Breakfast was good, and the staff were nice. The hotel is comfortable and well located, though it could use more space for guests to sit and have a drink on cooler evenings. On our first night we were in room 101. It was as large as a deluxe double, but the view was just the roof and kitchen chimney, so it shouldn't be rented as a deluxe double. The hotel moved us to a much better room the next day. The restaurant is expensive, including its wine list, and when we visited there weren't other dining options in town. The daily specials were pretty much the same for three days running. Still, it's a nice hotel.

The reception shuts at 9pm, so you're on your own if something comes up after that. There also wasn't much to see or do nearby, and the WiFi was terrible, working only now and then. Breakfast cost an extra 16EU because it wasn't included in our room rate, and the spread wasn't very appetizing. On the plus side, the hotel was adorable and clean, the staff were sweet and helpful, the beds were comfortable, and the shower soaps and shampoos were nice. They'd also left small toys for the children, since I'd listed them on the reservation.
