Dinner and breakfast were exceptionally good, and the place itself was nice and quiet.

The bill was the biggest shock: €332 for one night, a light dinner, and breakfast. Had we gone along with every suggestion, it would easily have topped €400. A glass of white wine was €10, a small salad €9, and even the smallest three-course meal was €48 before drinks. A main course cost €30, while each bland soufflé, with no Grand Marnier taste, was €16. The redfish came as two small pieces with barely any vegetables, and no purée or potatoes. My partner felt a little unwell and skipped both wine and a starter, which drew a sour response from Roselyne. She also kept pushing coffee and extras, and it took several excuses to decline. The room alone cost 170 euros without breakfast, after we waited an hour for hot water because of a technical malfunction. We stayed on September 6, 2017, when only two rooms were occupied. I had praised A l'Orée du Bois and its owners, Roselyne and Paul Aguesse, in a glowing review ten years earlier. Back then they seemed like a cheerful couple, with reasonable prices in a beautiful wooded setting. This time, A l'Orée du Bois felt ridiculously expensive. Paul Aguesse is a decent chef, a

The two managers gave us such a warm welcome, and the peaceful setting was lovely. The dishes were excellent, especially the sweetbreads. I was also impressed by the wine list, with its great choices and hidden gems at very reasonable prices. I'd definitely return if I can.

The menu was varied and original, and the wine list had plenty to choose from. Still, the manager seemed completely out of her depth, with little politeness for a place like this. Her remarks felt inappropriate and she wasn't friendly. It's an unusual place, but I tried it and won't return.

The hosts make it easy to feel comfortable, whether you're taking it easy in the garden, having an aperitif, or sitting down for a meal. L'Orée du Bois was a lovely discovery, with a special spirit to the place. You can reach beautiful natural surroundings on foot, and a region rich in history is close by. A treat for all the senses.
