Mado

I later saw that the full room rate of €159.00 had been taken from my bank account, even though I’d been told no money would be taken and the cancellation email confirmed nothing was due. I booked on the hotel’s own website, so I had to challenge them directly. After several attempts to reach them by phone, website, and email, I got only a cursory message on their website saying their policy was not to accept cancellations. We booked a room at Mado through the hotel website, which was a big mistake. On arrival, the reception was untidy and dismal, so I asked to see the room. The stair carpet was dirty, the walls were damaged, and the room looked shabby. The bed looked as if someone had been lying on it. The hotel and room didn’t meet the standard shown on the website, so I said I wasn’t willing to stay. The receptionist/owner seemed bemused, but agreed, confirmed no money had been taken, and suggested other hotels where we might find a room. I later got an email acknowledging the cancellation and saying nothing had been taken or was due. If you’re looking for a charming hotel with great sea views, don’t come here. It was dark, dismal, and dirty, and the website photos seemed to be from a different era or owner, with no connection to how the hotel looks now. I accept that it’s fair to charge for a no-show, but not for a room that falls far below acceptable standards or differs so greatly from what was advertised, especially after being told nothing would be charged.

I can’t say what the hotel is like, but €12 for a pint equivalent of pression beer is outrageous. They even list that price on the board. It leaves a terrible stain on an otherwise great town.

The hotel and restaurant sit in a lovely location, but the two coffees we had were very average, came in paper cups, and cost €10. We won’t be going back.

The menu card was dirty, and there was no soap in the toilets, so hygiene doesn’t seem to get much attention. We also had grumpy staff, poor service, and mediocre food at top-end prices. There are much better restaurants nearby. Avoid.
