ibis budget Caen Nord Mémorial

The man at the front desk was nice, the only saving grace. We had two rooms and both were unbearably hot. The small fan in ours was broken, so I took it downstairs to swap. The replacement was only marginally better, shook, and made loud noises all night. We couldn’t open the windows because there were rubbish bags and litter on the grass outside, giving off a lovely smell. I knew it was an ibis budget, so I expected the worst, but this was poor even by budget standards.

The room was very basic, but for the price there wasn’t anything to complain about. Thanks especially to Mohammad for the five-star service at the breakfast bar. There was a nice selection of breads, juices, and cereal. Great value overall.

The shower was very good, and the receptionist was nice. The rooms, though, get really hot on summer nights. The fan they provide is noisy and doesn’t cool them down. There’s no kettle or tea and coffee in the room either, which most hotels have. We stayed with family to see the area around Caen before heading to a Euro camp further away. The most annoying part was the noisy English family opposite us. We’re English too and have kids, so it wasn’t about their nationality or having children. Their kids slammed the doors over and over from 7.45 to 8.30 am, and the parents didn’t tell them to stop even once. The doors bang loudly when they shut by themselves, so if you’re staying with kids, please ask them to respect the other guests and keep quiet.

There was so much noise, with people banging on doors until 3 am and running around on the stairs. Staff weren’t interested. Don’t stay at this hotel.
