The young woman at the entrance was especially polite and helpful, and spoke perfect English. I spent a leisurely afternoon at L' Abbaye École, absorbed in the school's history and the remarkable tapestries at the Dom Robert Museum. The garden added to the visit. If you enjoy art, architecture, and French history, it's an ideal place to see.

It was great to return to the school I attended and see the parts we weren't allowed into back then. Sorèze is a lovely, picturesque village, and there's an excellent campsite nearby, plus an aire if you're looking to keep costs down.

The abbey's long history is visible throughout the site, from its cloister and refectory to the assembly hall and former dormitories. Its story began in the 8th century, when Pepin the Short founded the Benedictine abbey. It became a college in the 17th century, then Louis XVI turned it into a Royal Military School in 1776. The institution trained officers, scholars, and explorers and grew into one of Europe's most prestigious schools. It closed in 1991 and is now open to visitors. Outside, the expansive wooded park makes for a relaxed stroll and gives a sense of the students' surroundings.

The range and richness of Dom Robert's tapestries at Sorèze Abbey make this exhibition a wonderful find. Woven in Aubusson, they're impressive to see. Dom Robert's religious and artistic paths came together at the nearby Benedictine Abbey of En Calcat, after his meeting with Jean Lurçat. It's well worth the detour.

The historic setting gave the summer evening mystery game a real sense of beauty and intrigue. The puzzles were well designed, and the staff were very friendly. I left wanting to return to the Soreze Abbey School for a more traditional visit.
