I booked a room for my mother from 2nd to 4th May, paying £300. Her partner had become critically ill in hospital while they were on holiday, so she needed somewhere to stay. I made the booking late on Friday 30th April at 8pm. Before midday the next day, 1st May, I contacted the property to explain that the hospital could accommodate my mother, and asked if they could refund part of the cost. The receptionist understood, but said only the owner could approve a refund. After weeks of chasing, the owner refused both a refund and the option to move the booking to another date. I’d tried to cancel within a couple of business hours of booking, so the room had not been kept from other guests and the hotel hadn’t incurred costs. I’d also explained the reason for the booking through booking.com. Even with the zero-cancellation policy, refusing any goodwill felt cruel and unjust. I still can’t understand why they kept the full £300.

A comfortable little boutique hotel, and very quiet. Just bear in mind there’s no breakfast, and the bar only opens for limited hours.

The whole stay at Sherborne House was simple and lovely. Tracey was there to welcome me, handed over the key when I arrived, and that was all I needed. The historic building and hotel were airy, bright, and clean, and the bed and pillows were really comfortable after a full day of family fun. I’ve already booked for next year and am excited to come back.

The shower was the worst part. It was over the bath, in a bathroom that was already in poor condition, and it was broken and stuck on HOT. I loathe hot showers. The busy road outside also made fresh air noisy, even after I fiddled with the difficult sash windows. Inside, the carpets looked tired and dirty, and the twin beds in our worn room wobbled. The receptionist wasn’t welcoming when we arrived, though we were nearly an hour late and had earnestly apologised. Her attitude still concerned us. The next morning we raised our dissatisfaction with the same receptionist, who offered a £50 rebate. I asked for it to be processed before we left, but that was apparently too optimistic. The owner, Mr Gez Chatal, was away on what was described as an important business trip to India with many meetings, and refused to approve it. If you care about design, beauty, and quality, I’d avoid this awful, low-quality hotel and look elsewhere for accommodation.

The host was ready to greet me when I arrived and made me feel at home. My three-night stay was fantastic, with breakfast included, and the hotel felt peaceful and safe. It’s close to Attleborough town centre and the station, so getting around was easy. Since I was celebrating my birthday, finding a sweet card and present in my room was a lovely touch. Nothing seemed too much trouble, you just have to let them know what you need. Can’t wait to visit again. A hidden gem and a brilliant experience!
