We were charged £128 after being told one of the steaks would be taken off the bill. When it arrived, nothing had been removed. The manager who made that promise had disappeared, and the staff member we asked showed no concern, offered no apology and made no effort to sort it out. That lack of professionalism was the worst part of the visit. The meal itself was poor. We ordered two £30 steaks, a steak and kidney pie, and chicken goujons. The steaks were dry, tough, chewy and badly overcooked, hard enough to cut that you’d need a mechanic’s strength. The chips were overcooked too, the mushroom looked old and shrivelled, and the whole plate gave the impression that nobody in the kitchen cared. The food was poor and the service worse. I’ve had better steaks from supermarket reduced sections and better customer service from self-checkout machines. I’ve spent thousands of pounds at The Roman Camp Inn over the years. We used to visit regularly with family and friends, often spending £130-£220 in one visit. We complained politely about the steaks, and thought the bill had been dealt with when the manager offered to remove one. Instead, we were left paying for poor food after being told otherwise. It’s the way loyal customers were treated that bothers me most, more than the money. If this is how they treat people who’ve spent thousands supporting the business, I dread to think how they treat everyone else. The Roman Camp Inn has lost our custom for good. Friends and family who came on our recommendation will hear why we’re not going back. Embarrassing food, embarrassing service, and management that doesn’t stand by its word. Avoid at all costs.

The rooms and the whole hotel were spotlessly clean, and the bed was very comfortable. Having two armchairs in the bedroom was a welcome touch. Staff were cheerful, friendly and obliging, and the small issues we spotted on arrival were sorted straight away. Meals were flavourful and nicely presented. Pre-ordering breakfast meant it was ready on time, and both the food and bar prices felt good value. There’s plenty of parking, and the hotel is well placed for seeing the north Norfolk coast and the little villages inland. It’s one of the best small hotels or inns we’ve stayed at in years. We’d highly recommend it and will definitely return.

At The Roman Camp Inn, we’d booked for five but were crammed around a table meant for four. They’d also run out of Sunday roasts on a Sunday afternoon. There was no apology or attempt to make up for it, and the service was painfully slow and uninterested. The staff seemed to find serving people a bother, with no customer care from beginning to end. We went to The Feathers afterwards and had an entirely different experience: brilliant service, friendly staff, great food and an atmosphere that made us feel welcome. If you’re choosing between the two, save yourself the disappointment and go to The Feathers. Ask for Mandy, she was lovely and made spending £400 a little easier to swallow.

The food was tasty and the décor looked nice. The place was clean, and the setting was lovely, though the car park let it down. Prices were quite high, but not over the top for this sort of establishment. Staff seemed to be trying, but lacked charisma and talent. The bar service was awful; even simple drinks seemed to confuse them, and the table service staff seemed too shy to speak properly.

We made a last-minute booking as a birthday treat. We know the area and had driven past many times, but had never stayed before. It turned out to be a great choice. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable, and the hotel standards were top notch. The gardens are beautiful, with seating and a bar outside, weather permitting. There’s also a lounge and bar with lovely armchairs for a relaxing drink. We ate breakfast and evening meals there, and the food was absolutely gorgeous. Dinner in the beautiful conservatory was outstanding. Breakfast has to be pre-ordered, then it’s freshly prepared and served when you arrive. There’s a separate breakfast room as well. The staff, including the manager, worked hard and were friendly and approachable, which made the stay even more relaxing. They all looked after us wonderfully, especially Roxy and Grace, who seemed to get lumbered with us during service times. The only downside was having to leave and head home. We’ll definitely be back. Great place, great people. It should have a 10-star rating.
