Catherine was friendly and knew so much about the area. I’ve taught A Level Britain, but still learned a lot from her, and my daughter and I had a wonderful day. She picked us up by car at Hexham station, a quick trip from Newcastle where we were staying. We visited the excellent Roman Army Museum and brilliant Vindolanda, where we met some of Catherine’s archaeologist friends, and stopped at several spots along the way to see the Wall. I’d strongly recommend this trip.

Nigel and Catherine gave us a lovely few days in such a peaceful, beautiful area. The pod was spotless and had everything we needed, with a comfy bed and an excellent shower. Breakfasts were great, and the cake was lovely too. They were helpful, knowledgeable and easy to reach, but only offered advice when we wanted it and respected our privacy. Even though the outdoor space is right on their doorstep, it feels very private and is beautifully decorated, with fields in view and The Wall just a short way away. We also enjoyed good pub food at The Samson Inn and The Greenhead hotel.

Catherine’s guided tour of Vindolanda was amazing. She’s clearly an expert, and we learned so much during an exceptional afternoon at the site. Nigel’s cooked breakfasts were amazing too. Our home for the two nights was clean, spacious and very well equipped. The microwave and fridge were a bonus, and the bed was comfy. Catherine and Nigel made us feel extremely welcome, and the accommodation was to a very high standard. Thank you both for a wonderful stay. Pat and Brian Clegg

We arrived absolutely soaked, and our generous hosts dried all our gear in their dedicated drying room. They even drove us to and from a very good dinner at the local hotel. The cabin was very comfy, with an en suite and all the amenities, and breakfast was excellent. Thanks, Nigel and Catherine!

The owners were friendly, and the lodge was cosy, clean and tidy. It’s dog friendly, has a good location for walks, and we had a full cooked breakfast in the morning. The views weren’t good, though, despite what the website led us to expect. It felt expensive for what it was, and I don’t think I’d hurry back, but that’s just my preference. If a cosy pod is your thing, I’d recommend it.
