We fancied a game of darts, having not been in for a year or so, but the back room has lost both its pool table and dartboard. The Nelson had five pumps, yet only the Copper was on. Most Palmers pubs have at least three of their mediocre beers, so that was disappointing. At £5 for a flat 3.7% beer, it felt poor value. The pub was busy, but the landlord was hardly welcoming. We crossed the street and had an excellent pint of Otter Ale at The Colmer for 75p less.

The pub downstairs felt really welcoming, with real ales on tap and a five-star hygiene rating. We stayed two nights in the small hotel and found it handy for the main street and local walks. Our room was clean, nicely furnished and had everything we needed, and the owners were friendly and helpful.

There are old photographs on the walls, and the history of the place is interesting. It’s a friendly pub with well-kept beer, and having a large car park right next door is handy.

We were grateful they kept the kitchen open for us. It was hard to find somewhere serving food late in Bridport, and they made us feel very welcome when we came in for dinner and a drink. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was great.
