The Washington

The breakfast spread was nicely set out, with cereals, cheeses, meats, several kinds of yoghurt, and a traditional English breakfast. We did have to ask for teaspoons and plates for the toast, as neither was available. The young woman serving was friendly and helpful, though the kitchen noise carried into the dining room, with plenty of laughing, jokes, and general fooling around. Some background music might soften that. We stayed at the Washington Guest House while visiting St George's Theatre, which is conveniently central for the venue. On-site parking is very limited, but they provide permits for nearby side streets. A pleasant young woman checked us in. The building is a little tired in places, though our room was clean and presentable. There are lots of steps throughout, so it may not suit people with mobility issues. We had a comfortable, pleasant stay.

We had the traditional English breakfast on all three mornings, and most attractions were no more than a half-hour walk away or easy to get to by bus. Our basement twin room was tidy, with free refreshments, and didn't feel damp or mouldy at all. The bathroom looked very new.

The location made it easy to get into the city, and we found a good spot in the secure parking area at the back when we arrived early. The front desk staff were especially kind and welcoming, which gave us a great first impression. The room was dated, though, and there were stains on both the sheets and the floor. At our first breakfast, the server seemed rushed and flustered. Other guests and we tried to help where we could. We understood she was probably under pressure, but at times she came across as rude, and that affected the experience. My boyfriend and I had a mixed stay at The Washington, with some real positives alongside things that could be improved.

I've stayed here many times and would definitely recommend it. I had another lovely visit, with a clean, comfortable room. Yanna and Katia at reception deserve a special mention. They were friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our stay, and their customer service made a real difference.
