Serendipity House

The location was nice, though a little outside town, and there’s a small pub around the corner. For one night, the hotel was okay, and breakfast was alright. But the stay fell short of what the website led us to expect. Self check-in wasn't clearly explained, and although I was told an email with the door codes had been sent, I never got it. Luckily, we arrived just before the only staff member left for the night. There was no 24-hour reception, and the bar and patio were locked after they left, so we couldn't sit outside and look over the city as we'd hoped. Our room had unpleasant plug-in air fresheners, a toilet that kept making running-water noise, and a timer that clicked all night and couldn't be removed. We were near the front door and heard everyone coming in and out, typing in the code and slamming the door. The rooms weren't soundproof as the website claimed.

We had a great night and will definitely be back. The restaurant was top class, with a great menu, huge portions and really tasty, warm food. We ate in a snug at the back with an amazing view, and our server was lovely, friendly and chatty. She kept making sure we had a drink, and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Serendipity House B&B felt hotel quality. The rooms were spotless, spacious, warm, bright and comfortable. The ensuite was clean and roomy, and the beds were probably the most comfortable we've had at any B&B.

Several places, including The Wall, were an easy walk from this great location.

We left without bringing our suitcases in, since they probably wouldn't have fit in the tiny room, and found another hotel. We never went back. The room was run down and nothing like we expected, and the bathroom was so cramped I don't think I'd have used it to shower, let alone dry off. The place itself looked shabby, unlike the photos, which seemed very old. The man who answered the bell didn't make us feel welcome. He ran off to get his book, then hurried up the stairs and we eventually found him, I think on the third floor. He scribbled the door code on a scrap of paper and tore it from the book. He didn't mention the breakfast we'd been expecting before leaving. Only one star because zero isn't an option.
