The one good part of breakfast was that it was cooked to order, so it arrived hot and tasted much better than a lukewarm buffet. The waitress also thanked us and said goodbye when we left. That was the only genuinely pleasant, proactive interaction with staff, and it doesn't lift this above one star. Everything else was disappointing. The greeting felt poor, with no eye contact or effort to make us feel welcome. Our room smelled damp and mouldy, its internal door chain was broken, and the dated decor matched the tired exterior, which badly needs a refresh. Breakfast meant walking to the pub, rather than eating inside or beside the hotel, and the cooked option wasn't unlimited. We waited 25 minutes, while people who arrived after us were served about 10 minutes earlier. This was well below the Premier Inn standard. Avoid.

The drain-like smell in the room was so bad that we left and found somewhere else to stay. We've stayed at many Premier Inns around the country and are usually happy with them, but this was a first for us. The room itself was clean. When we raised the smell with reception, the receptionist said she couldn't help and suggested we get air freshener. She agreed the room had a terrible smell.

The room was clean and had what we needed. I booked two nights on a non-refundable rate, but my plans changed and I only stayed one. I wasn't expecting a refund, so it was kind of Premier Inn to charge me for just the one night and breakfast.

We've stayed at this Premier Inn several times while visiting family around East Grinstead, and we'll keep coming back. The receptionist on Sunday evening, 26th April, was especially kind and understanding towards my dad, who has mobility issues. I couldn't fault the stay.

I stay at different Premier Inns quite often for work, and this one was exceptionally clean. The staff were warm and friendly, and the food from the adjacent pub was excellent and nicely presented. I'd be happy to come back.
