Come by before 9:30 in the morning if you want to enjoy this little lane without the crowds, or get a clear photo. Advocate’s Close is tucked just off the Royal Mile, with a steep, narrow path and quiet stone walls. It has loads of character, and walking through it gives you a real sense of Edinburgh’s Old Town history.

There are lots of closes along the Royal Mile, but this one really stood out to me. It opens up to views of the New Town and the Scott Monument, and runs downhill to Market Street. I hadn't realised it was a tourist spot the first time I walked through. It's quite steep, though the view makes it worthwhile.
