Grove House Hotel

Getting to the city centre was easy, and there are supermarkets, pharmacies, takeaways, and the train station nearby. We stayed a couple of nights with a friend and had a great time. The room was modern, spacious, and clean. Downstairs, one lounge has a fridge with cold drinks available during the day and a coffee machine for unlimited hot drinks; the other has plenty of seats and sofas. Reception staff were kind, helpful, and quick. We could hear people talking in the hallway, and very loud guests in other rooms, though there was no traffic noise. A good experience that I’d recommend.

The shower had great pressure and the bathroom worked fine. The room was small, but that was expected. The bed, though, was awful: an old spring mattress that sagged in the middle, with the wooden board underneath easy to feel. We stayed just one night before an early flight, and that was about all we could manage. If you only need somewhere to sleep, it’ll do.

The lounge sofas were a nice place to unwind, and there was also a snack room where you could have a full breakfast if you wanted. It stayed tidy, with supplies regularly topped up. The hotel is an easy walk from the historic area, around 20-25 minutes. Rooms are on the small side, but spotless and equipped with the essentials. It was clean and cozy, and exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended!

Buses run from either end of Grove St, and the shower and bedroom were clean. I also appreciated the secure windows and doors as a woman travelling. The pantry and pleasant lounge were useful, and the courtyard was nice apart from an abandoned chair and a broken wooden storage unit. But the deluxe room didn’t feel deluxe: there was an ugly repair over the exit sign using a black plastic bag and tape. No wardrobe, hair dryer, or iron in the room, despite those being advertised. Breakfast was poor, with two broken coffee machines and croissants so stale they were almost inedible. There was no butter for all four days. The male receptionist seemed well-meaning, but uninformed and untrained, and one was very scruffy.
