No.32 Hotel

The hotel is beautiful and the staff were friendly, but there were a few things that made the stay less comfortable. Our room and bed were both smaller than I expected, though the bed was still comfortable. There’s quite a bit of traffic noise on the road, so light sleepers may want to keep that in mind. It was also hard to reach anyone at reception after check-in, and communication felt confusing. I got emails from three different accounts, which worried me a little from a data privacy perspective. Maybe they’re still working out some business kinks, but I hope they can improve this for future guests. The location near Haymarket tram station is convenient for getting around the city.

The bed was really comfortable, and the room was clean and nice. There was tea and coffee in the room too. The shower drain stopped working one day, but I told reception and it was fine the next day. The hotel itself was quiet, and the bar was very quiet as well, which was fine. Great bars and restaurants are just around the corner, and buses, trains and trams are all easy to get to.

No.32 has a really personal, cosy feel. The staff were warm and helpful, housekeeping kept the room spotless each day, and we appreciated the fresh water, tea and coffee. The flowers, décor and general atmosphere were lovely too. Our room had been newly decorated, though it was small and didn’t have a proper wardrobe. Still, it was a nice place to come back to after exploring the city. The main catch is the lack of curtains. Edinburgh gets light very early in summer, so we woke up much earlier than we wanted, and privacy was tricky. The staff offered us another room straight away at no extra charge. It had a similar setup, so we stayed put, but their quick and sincere effort to help meant a lot. We didn’t get to try breakfast or the evening bar, though both are available. We’d gladly recommend this charming little hotel. Just bring an eye mask if you’re a light sleeper.

We found this independent hotel to be good value, especially compared with the wild prices I was seeing elsewhere at the time. It’s on a quiet, rather grand street, close to lots of independent cafés and some excellent restaurants. We had two nice rooms, the beds were comfortable, and everything worked. Jeffin was the staff member looking after us throughout. He was friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and charming, and that personal touch really lifted the stay. I’d recommend it.
