The self-service setup worked really well. There was a cupboard on our floor with anything we needed, and having dairy-free milk for tea and coffee was a real treat for me, since I’m allergic to dairy. The building itself is stunning, with lovely historical details alongside modern touches. Our bright, clean room was comfortable, though some things needed attention: water damage on the bathroom ceiling and mildew and split caulking around the shower. The Royal Mile is about a 20-minute walk away.

We were happy without breakfast or staff on site, since we rarely use those services. The instructions and key codes all worked fine. We loved the West End and Eleven Stafford Street, with Teutchers nearby, Dean's Village an easy walk away, and the airport tram stop close by. Old Town was walkable too. Our Palmerston suite was gorgeous, with an amazingly comfortable bed. Just be ready for the spiral stairs with your luggage, especially after a long day of travel. We absolutely recommend the place.
The view was an alley full of bins and scattered rubbish, with garbage trucks and lorries coming and going. The response was, “We’re so sorry.” The room itself was nearly impossible to move around in, and luggage made it worse. We couldn’t find another place because the city was fully booked. There’s barely room to sit anywhere except the bed, and the otherwise modern bathroom is about the size of a small closet. We’ve stayed all over Scotland, so we weren’t expecting anything palatial. Be very careful when booking through Hotels.com or the hotel’s site. The booking software may assign an open room that isn’t the one shown in the photos, so check the tiny square-footage print. The pictures showed a large suite with a sitting area and lovely view, but they were stock photos. I booked a fairly expensive room for our 20th anniversary and found myself in a “premium” room where I knocked my knees against the door getting in. Most rooms are up very steep spiral stairs, so you’ll have to carry your luggage.
They advertised a fancy luxury stay, but the room was tiny and very expensive for what was provided. The bathroom was about the size of an airplane toilet, and there was almost no soundproofing. We could hear everything from the stairs and nearby rooms.
The Moray suite was lovely, and we were surprised by how nice the place was since we booked at the last minute. It’s close to good bars and restaurants in the New Town, which we preferred to the busier Old Town. The area has its own feel and is still an easy walk from the attractions. Dean village is close, and Stockbridge isn’t far either. I’d stay again and have recommended it to people we know.
