The bar area was great and the staff were friendly, which made the hotel side being neglected all the more disappointing. The room looked decent at first, and was warm and clean, but the double bed was really two overly firm singles pushed together. I could feel them shifting, and neither was comfortable. The shower pressure was poor too. I arrived on Sunday afternoon after paying for three nights, and at nearly 4pm the room was still dirty. I’d been happy to stay here for my early shifts until I was woken around 10pm by three loud bangs. They sounded like people slamming doors, so that may not have been the hotel’s fault, but the walls could be thicker and more should be done to keep noise out. I could also hear other guests talking. At over 50 quid a night, that wasn’t right. I won’t return, which is a shame because I liked the bar.

The room was noisy both nights, smelled strongly of tobacco smoke, and had a wet, slippery bathroom floor. They offered a refund, but I still haven’t received it. What should’ve been a special birthday weekend wasn’t.

After a long drive, the food was a lovely bit of comfort, and I’d go back. It was well priced and very good. The place was busy and thriving on an otherwise random Thursday, which seemed like a good sign. As I was dining alone, the serving staff thoughtfully offered to refill my drink so I wouldn’t have to leave my belongings unattended. That unexpected bit of care made a difference.

I stay in different hotels across the UK every week for work, so I’m writing this from experience. This was my first time choosing this one while working in Exeter, and I won’t be back. The walls were paper thin, pipes creaked and groaned all night, and the room had a horrible musty smell. The bathroom was so small I could barely get dressed in it. I think it was recently renovated, but the tiling wasn’t finished and there was mould all over the ceiling above the shower, as shown in the photos. It felt like a converted military barracks. At £100 a night for bed and breakfast, I felt ripped off and disappointed. There are plenty of other places nearby for a similar price.

I felt physically and mentally violated. The cleaners entered my room while I was out, even though I hadn’t requested any service. There was no do not disturb sign or card asking for the room to be cleaned, and nobody had asked me about it. I’d left private paperwork to finish later, including business papers, bank statements, and court documents. These unknown people could potentially have read or copied it. I thought I was in a secure, locked room, but I might as well have left the door open. I checked out as soon as I found out and asked for a full refund. I’ve never had service like this when paying to stay somewhere. I also found a woman’s broken painted nail on the floor. The key sticks in the lock of room 211 and is difficult to get out, and the floorboards squeak constantly. GDPR.
