I had to send a copy of my passport or driving licence beforehand, which felt like too much, but I did it. I knew it was a cheap budget hotel when we arrived, though I wasn’t prepared for how bad the room was. It looked even smaller than the pictures, like stepping into a broom cupboard, and smelled strongly of mould. The carpet was dirty and there was just one small window that only partly opened. I couldn’t see a clear fire exit. I refused to spend even a minute in the room, and we had to find somewhere else at short notice, which cost us more, on top of paying for this room.

We paid £57 in peak season, which seemed reasonable. There’s no breakfast, but plenty of cafes are five minutes down the road. The location is good, with parking just outside the controlled zone. Room 1 was large and well ventilated, with plenty of towels. The furniture and fittings are old, and the bathroom is very dated, with an old purple suite, but everything worked and hot water was no problem. Wi-Fi was OK. There was a kettle but no tea or coffee sachets, and no soap. The mattress was probably the hardest I’ve ever slept on.

The mattress was uncomfortable, and I kept waking up when bathroom tiles fell off. The room was old, and there was a lot of mould in the bathroom.

Stains on the carpets, no tea or coffee in the rooms, and it was dirty. I’ve never had such a bad experience in a place to stay.

I work all over the country and have stayed in some rough places, but I’d have been better off on the street. It was dirty, and whoever’s doing the cleaning needs sacking. I’m taking photos for the manager and will phone the agent tomorrow.
