The outside sign is bothering me. It’s not a real noughts and crosses game: X won with four moves, while O has five. It freaks me out. The beer is nice, though, and the venue and food definitely deserve five stars for what matters.

The battered cod was enormous, crispy, fresh and delicious. We had a fantastic evening thanks to the food, the staff and the local customers. Our one-year-old was welcome to roam around and interact with everyone. We loved the whole experience and will go back while we’re staying in this little town.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at the Noughts and Crosses. The seabass was fresh, arrived hot and came out quickly, and the wine was reasonably priced. Tom, our waiter and barman, was lovely and friendly. It’s a relaxed place.

The breakfast was plentiful and nicely presented: cereals followed by a full English, with coffee and toast kept coming. It was served within ten minutes of ordering. I slept well in a very comfortable bed, and the room was pleasant, with clean towels, fresh linen and tea, coffee and hot chocolate, plus a complimentary biscuit. The food was excellent and the bar reasonably well stocked. The hosts were helpful and communicative. I was very happy with the stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

The service was attentive and friendly without hovering, and the meal was far better than some of the village restaurants with higher ratings. I started with plump, juicy scallops that weren’t overcooked, then had the steak and Stilton pie. It was a proper pie, with generous chunks of steak and gravy with melted Stilton.
