For £137 for one night for two people, we expected at least basic hygiene. The place was extremely dirty and unhygienic. The pictures on Booking may be from years ago, when everything was new. It’s a ground-floor room in an old building near the train station. The entrance stairs and wall leading upstairs looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned in years. Inside the room, there were stains on the walls that looked like suspicious liquids, plus scuffs from luggage or shoes. There was hair, dust and dirt on the floor, and a dead bug. The bed’s leather was peeling all over, there was black mould around the windows, and the curtains were slashed and dirty. Spider webs and dust were everywhere, the light switches were dirty, and there was water damage on the ceiling from the room above. The bathroom was no better. Beard trimmings were on the sink, the wall around it and even the toilet paper roll. The sink and walls were dirty. Everything felt so foul that we didn’t even check the shower, and we didn’t shower that night.

The flat was filthy, the towels were dirty, and it was infested with bed bugs. Stay away. The owners should be ashamed.

BED BUGS, STAY AWAY!! There were cleanliness warning signs from the start, but I managed to overlook them until we found actual bed bugs. The place clearly needs a refurb, even a small one, and basic cleaning had been missed: cobwebs on the windows, wall stains and handprints around the headboard. Then we found a damp towel hanging on the back of the bathroom door, apparently left by a previous guest or possibly a cleaner. It was a last-minute, cheap booking, so I let some of it slide, even though the price shouldn’t determine whether a place is clean. Many of the marks looked like more than someone simply missing a spot. It seemed like they just didn’t care. Still, the place looked generally clean enough, so we tried to put it out of mind. Later, when we got back and were getting ready for bed, bed bugs were crawling on it. We saw one huge one and one small one, and have no idea how many more there were. We tried straight away to find somewhere else to stay, but at about 2am there was nowhere available. We had to wait there until we could catch a coach back to London at 4am. The host brushed me off, and I still haven’t received a refund. It’s criminal that Booking.com lets this property, and the other rooms there, remain on the platform. A hotel would be shut down by a health inspector. Just disgusting!
