I've always enjoyed my stays at HF houses. The staff are friendly and the food is good, and it's an easy 20 minute walk into the centre of Whitby. The rooms are especially good value if you can catch one of the flash sales.

The communal side of these holidays works so well for solo travellers, with people eating, walking and chatting together, though families would enjoy them too. We had a lovely holiday, with a comfortable, well appointed room and a similar bathroom. The mixer shower took a little while to get to the right temperature. Food was included: a great breakfast with lots of options, a really good packed lunch, then a three course dinner followed by hot drinks. Meals were served at large round tables seating seven. Volunteer leaders take the guided walks, and there's evening entertainment as well as a bar and a very good drying room. Self guided stays cost a little less. Give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.

We had a really enjoyable stay in a lovely, clean house, and the food was great.

We had lovely weather and a very good walking holiday around Whitby. In the rain, I can imagine it would feel quite different. The walks came in three lengths each day, roughly 6 to 12 miles, and the gradients could make them feel longer. Our group was lovely, so the atmosphere was great. The grand old country house has colourful decor that makes the public rooms look dated, though they're warm and reasonably comfortable. I believe the bedrooms range from clean and comfortable, perfectly adequate rooms to well equipped ones with bathtubs. The food was a good choice of well cooked three course meals, chosen the day before dinner, and there was a good selection of sandwiches to choose from the day before too.

Larpool Hall has the things walkers need for changeable weather, including a boot room. We were there for a guided walking holiday with HF Holidays, though it's also suitable for cyclists and people doing self guided walks. The food was more than adequate, the staff attentive and the rooms clean. It's close to Whitby town centre, with a wonderful walking landscape and good accommodation.
