The building is beautiful and the area is great, but our third floor room was awful. The water pipes made it very hot. We used the desk fan, but the only way to switch it on was at the desk, and there were no sockets near the bed. The room was large, so the fan didn’t really help. Sleeping was extremely difficult. The drawer fronts were loose and coming off, and the drawers weren’t assembled properly. The bathroom was clean, but badly maintained. The shower screen didn’t fit properly over the bath because of its side handle, so water ran down onto the vinyl floor. I slipped getting out, and there was no bath mat. The toilet had evidently been replaced without changing the flooring, leaving an arc of missing vinyl at the base and the floorboards showing. That’s not hygienic. There were holes in the black bathroom panels, roughly filled with some sort of green filler. The mirror was clearly old, with its silver backing coming away. Around the plug hole, down the inside and along the back of the bath were smudges of hard, rough black or grey material. I tried to wipe them off, but it was solid. I assume some hard filler had spilled and set there, making the bath uncomfortable underfoot and unsightly. There was no telephone in the room either. When we complained, the receptionist admitted the maintenance team “aren’t the best” and said that if we booked again, we should call ahead and request a lower floor sea front room because those were better. That left me thinking they know some rooms are below standard.
The room and bathroom were clean, and we had tea and coffee facilities. The hotel is in a great, central location, the lobby felt welcoming and the receptionist was fabulous. The car park was full, so we were lucky to get a space after 9pm. I assume our room was at the back of the hotel on the third floor. There was a weird wardrobe with a lock that looked terrible and out of place. We could hear music from a pub or club at the back until nearly 3am, plus people shouting and screaming. It really put a damper on the stay, so we checked out early to get home.
The Twin Exec room was spacious, spotless and had tea and coffee facilities. Reception was just as good, the lady there was friendly and really helpful. We had plenty of room to park on site, and the location is absolutely spot on. A good all-round hotel for a night in Southport, and I’d happily stay again.
The restaurant team deserve a mention, especially the two women working there. They were friendly, attentive and constantly busy. Dinner had a decent buffet spread, breakfast offered plenty of choice, and the food was fine for a three-star place. Our bedroom was large and clean, though the small double bed was my one complaint. We booked as part of a Simply Red package and, despite being unsure after reading reviews, were pleasantly surprised. For the price and location, it’s a decent hotel.
The service was good, but I wouldn't come back. We went to Sunday Buffet at the Prince of Wales at 12:30, right when it started, and much of the food was disappointing. The roast potatoes were all right, though the green beans and sweetcorn looked dry, as if they'd been sitting out for hours. It was a shame the beef, ham and turkey weren't carved by a chef. They looked like frozen food. Never again.
