The Lord Street Hotel, BW Signature Collection

The hotel has lovely decor, and we were comfortable in our room, though there was very little storage and just three coat hangers. The lift stopped short of our floor, so we had quite a lot of stairs to manage. It wouldn't suit anyone with mobility problems. Drinks were very expensive, and I thought the £8 a day parking charge was too much, so we didn't use the car park. Breakfast at the Bold was good, although the staff were a bit over-keen to clear plates from the tables.

We were there with Mum, my sister and me, and the staff were fantastic. Our room was clean, roomy and had air conditioning. The only real downside was having to go over to The Bold for breakfast because this hotel doesn't serve food. We also met a lovely group of golfers, including Rob, Charley, Dave, John and the others.

They upgraded us without us asking, which was a nice start, but then the sink in the toilet had no hot water and wouldn't hold water because its plug was broken. We also got trapped in the lift. The person on duty blamed us, saying we'd pressed the stop button, and was rude until the maintenance man explained the fault was on the outside and wasn't our doing. We never got an apology.

The mini fridge was the one good thing in our room. It was room 117, with a small double bed, and another room had a direct view in. We noticed someone watching us as we were about to change, so we shut the curtains. The walls were so thin we could hear our neighbour in very clear detail, and the hall doors banged all night. It kept us awake, and I was tempted to wedge our door open because the noise was that bad. The TV remote was broken too, and it took several attempts just to switch the TV on. The hotel seemed decent when we first arrived, but our room wasn't ready half an hour before check-in time, which was fair enough. We thought we'd have a drink at the bar while we waited. Eighteen quid for a vodka and a pint felt unacceptable, especially as the pint had a strange aftertaste. You can walk one minute down the road and pay half as much.
