We've stayed twice and will be back. Both times the rooms were clean and quiet, with curtains that kept the light out well, and the staff were friendly and helpful. It's a good hotel for the price and very conveniently right by the station. Some parts feel a bit tired, though with a large, old building that's not surprising.

The pool was lovely and quite warm, and everywhere was spotlessly clean, though a little tired. The dog friendly room was on the fourth floor and became an intolerably hot box in hot weather. Its window barely opened, and the electric desk fan they provided just moved the warm air around. They clearly know it's a problem, yet charge a fortune for a dog to stay. The bar had plenty of staff, but they seemed stressed, which didn't help the holiday atmosphere. The young women at breakfast were the nicest staff. They handled things incredibly well despite being understaffed and dealing with rude customers.

Oscar made our three days at the Grand Hotel noticeably more pleasant. He seemed genuinely keen to help and went out of his way to make me comfortable. That kind of attention from staff is refreshing. The hotel clearly cares about its guests, and I'd gladly return, preferably to be welcomed by Oscar again.

Lumi and Felix, the husband and wife running the 1881 restaurant, were the reason we'd book this hotel again. Their menu and wine pairing suggestions were excellent, and their service was the most efficient, knowledgeable and attentive we've experienced. The hotel overlooks the harbour and is central to seafront amenities; room prices were very good, rooms were clean and comfortable, and most staff were pleasant. The one problem was the concierge's abrasive attitude.

The lobby and bar are lovely, and the location has so much potential, but that was about it for us. Our south facing room had a tiny window that barely opened and no air conditioning, making it unbearable on a hot weekend even with the lousy fan they supplied. The bathroom was stuffy and old fashioned, and the furnishings took us straight back to the seventies. Outside, the terrace was a concrete ghetto, with the lovely Torbay view blocked by Poundshop plastic flower garlands and wonky umbrellas. Baffling. Breakfast was very average, lukewarm, and understaffed. The reception manager had a very poor, arrogant attitude even though there were errors on our bill. This place could be fabulous, but it needs a serious shake up.
